Powerlifting

Athletes learn the basic principles of strength, power, and flexibility to improve sport performance. Events include: Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift.

Programs

Recreational and competitive powerlifters welcome. All athletes who are new to the Special Olympics Calgary Powerlifting program are required to attend an evaluation before their registration can be approved. Athletes who are tentatively accepted into the program will receive the evaluation date, time, and location by email. Athletes should be able to: • Safely squat a 45 lb bar • Safely bench press a 45 lb bar • Safely deadlift 65 lbs • Participate in a two-hour training session without a 1:1 support person Athletes to provide training shoes, athletic clothing

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of gear and equipment do I need to have for practice?

Training shoes, athletic clothing, water bottle, team uniform (for competition - typically provided by affiliate).

Do you need experience to participate in this sport?

Yes! Knowledge of weight lifting and gym experience is required.

In some affiliates, there is a pre requisite program you may be required to complete.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

Weather cancellations are determined on the day of the program. If severe weather is forecasted during program time, the program will typically be cancelled (snowstorms, extreme cold warnings, etc.)
